P090C Ford Auto Trouble Code. P090C Ford Auto Trouble Code on vehicles with electronically controlled automatic transmissions, the 3-4 shift solenoid is responsible for actuating the hydraulic circuits to activate clutches or bands that change gears inside the automatic transmission.

Welcome to the Ford Check Engine Light codes page. Below you will find the most complete list of Ford trouble codes available. The code definitions are a good starting point when determining the cause of the service engine light but where do you go from there? We have a large number of resources to help you repair the problem. Here is how we suggest you proceed. Look up your code definition. This tells you where to start testing. If you are unsure of any abbreviations, check out the acronym list by clicking on the link at the left.

  1. OBD codes are accessed by plugging a code reader into the vehicle's OBD port. These codes provide a mechanic with information about the system and the conditions under which the issue was first identified. However, they can't provide a clear-cut solution to the actual cause of the problem - only clues for where to look.
  2. Accessing Ford OBD1 Trouble Codes Using Analog Voltmeter. EEC-V, DI 7.3L Turbo Diesel & Villager. Connect analog voltmeter to data link connector located in engine compartment.

  4. OBDII Ford Code Definitions. Be sure to double check the codes. Anything P1000 to P1999 or P3000 to P3400 will be Manufacturer specific and may not match the ones listed here.
  5. OBDII/EOBD diagnostics trouble codes definition. If your car supports OBD II or EOBD, then you can already use almost 5000 generic OBDII codes. These codes are from PowerTrain series (P0XXX, P2XXX, P34XX), Body Series (B0XXX), Chassis series (C0XXX), Network series (U0XXX, U2XXX, U3XXX).
  6. Be entered each time you download, so do not forget your password. Write down or copy and paste displayed codes and contact the Ford. Next, read our article Automotive Circuit Testing 101, and if there is an article related to the system you are testing, such as Oxygen Sensors or EGR concerns, read these as well. They will provide valuable info! If there is a link to a specific diagnosis strategy for the code then follow that and start testing. If there is no procedure for your manufacturer specific code, then I suggest referring to a similar generic OBD II code (these are listed numerically by system type) to get a good idea of what to look for. If at this point you still need assistance use the 'Get Help' link and let us know how we can help. We can provide information on component location, specifications, circuit color/location and more. We do ask that you please read the info available on the site first so that we can help reduce repeat questions. So please read our Disclaimer and when you're ready jump in!

Also, we value your feedback and like to hear stories of unusual fixes or concerns you may have run into with your Check Engine Light, so feel free to share your experiences by using the 'Contact Us' link. Let's go!

We do our best to update these Ford check engine light codes as frequently as possible. If you find one missing let us know and we we'll add it immediately! Please use the form on our Contact Page to get in touch with us. We certainly understand how frustrating it can be to look for a code definition and have it not online when you need it. And lets face it, if the service engine light is on then you need it now! It's easiest to use the 'Find On This Page' feature of your browser's 'Edit' menu to find codes on this page as the list is quite long. These are listed in numerical order for easy searching.

When retrieving Ford check engine light codes with an OBD II scan tool, proceed as follows:
1. Connect scan tool to the 16-pin data link connector (DLC) located underneath the steering column. The connector may have a removable cover.
2. Turn the ignition on.
3. Follow scan tool manufacturer's operating instructions to access the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC's).

Remember, these are manufacturer specific codes only. Refer to our Generic OBD II code list for definitions on all other Ford diagnostic trouble codes.

Engine-CodesOBDII Code List P0171 FORD
Repair Difficulty Level: 3/3

P0171 FORD Possible Causes

  • Intake air leaks
  • Faulty front heated oxygen sensor
  • Ignition misfiring
  • Faulty fuel injectors
  • Exhaust gas leaks
  • Incorrect fuel pressure
  • Lack of fuel
  • Faulty Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor
  • Incorrect Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) hose connection

First diagnose P0171 FORD code

Check the 'Possible Causes' listed above. Visually inspect the related wiring harness and connectors. Check for damaged components and look for broken, bent, pushed out, or corroded terminals.

P0171 FORD Tech Notes

If the P0171 is combined with the P0174 code, it's very likely that the problem is caused by an intake leak. If there are no intake leaks, the next step is to replace the air filter and clean the air flow meter. If the problem persistss the front oxygen (O2) sensor may need to be replaced.
It's a very common problem for the Ford Windstar. Link to a website with information on how to repair: 1999-2003 Fords Windstar Code P0171

With the Air/Fuel Mixture Ratio Self-Learning Control, the actual mixture ratio can be brought closely to the theoretical mixture ratio based on the mixture ratio feedback signal from the heated oxygen sensors 1. The Engine Control Module (ECM) calculates the necessary compensation to correct the offset between the actual and the theoretical ratios.

In case the amount of the compensation value is extremely large (The actual mixture ratio is too lean.), the ECM judges the condition as the fuel injection system malfunction and light up the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) (2 trip detection logic).
